March 2009, This Day In Rock

The Classic Vein

Tue, Mar 31, 2009

It's all about the classics, baby!

The Classic Vein

In looking at what will be presented today, all of the artists really stem from more of a classic rock vein.  And while some are still producing new material, rocking the world, to me they still fit in the genre of Classic Rock.

While AC/DC's Black Ice has been on the Billboard 200 Chart for 21 weeks, with it's peak in the #1 position, and currently holding onto #84 ( as of March, 28, 2009), to me they will always be one of the Monsters of Metal in the Classic Rock vein.  You just can't get much better with a hard rock anthem, than with For Those About to Rock (We Salute You), released back in 1981.  But it was on THIS day in rock, that the legendary, schoolboy uniform wearing, Angus Young was born in 1959.  So, we here at Road Crew Magazine salute Angus on his 50th birthday.

Without a doubt when you think of the great Classic Rock bands, you can not compile your list without adding The Beatles.  Music would not be what it is today, without the foundation that the Fab Four laid.  In 1964, the band sent a record in the recording industry that may never be surpassed.  It was on this day that the top 5 positions on the US singles chart was a Beatles song.  Can't Buy Me Love at number 1, Twist and Shout at number 2, She Loves You at number 3, I Want to Hold Your Hand at number 4 and Please Please Me at number 5.   They held 9 of the top 10 singles in Canada, and held the top six singles on the Australian charts.

Without a doubt, Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest Classic Rock guitarists ever to hit the music industry.  And when you picture his performances in your mind, one of the first you think of is when he set fire to his guitar while on stage.  It was on this day in 1967 at The Rainbow Theater that Jimi set fire to his guitar for the first time, suffering minor burns in the process.  Others to share the stage with him that night were The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdinck.

Music stirs passion within people.  The are either passionately FOR the music, or passionately AGAINST it.  When a man believed that Jimmy Page's music was Satanic, he rushed the stage during a Page/Plant concert at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan.  Although Page escaped injury, the security guards who tackled the man were injured.

Classic Metal.  One of the greatest names to fall under that category is Black Sabbath.  On this day in 2004, during a radio interview, Ozzy Osbourne confirmed that he was going to reform Black Sabbath for the Ozzfest 2004 summer tour.

Well, I hope this look back at some of the great Classic Rock bands was entertaining for you, giving you the desire to break out the lighter and not the cell phone at the next concert that you attend.  Have a great day and I'll see you tomorrow for This Day In Rock!
