March 2009, This Day In Rock
That's Classic
Today's look back at rock history, provides us with a look at a lot of classic rockers, although some of them are still making their stamp on music today, by continuing to release albums,
Today, like most days we have birthdays to look at, but one of them is not that of a person. I'll explain after we look at the rockers who are adding one more candle to their cake today.
Born today in 1943, turning 66, is Velvet Underground singer Lou Reed, who had a hit single in 1973 with the song Walk On The Wild Side.
Our other birthday today, whose cake is probably shining in a " blaze of glory", is singer Jon Bon Jovi, who is still getting in done in the studio as well as the arena. He was born today in 1962 and is 47.
The birthday that I mentioned that doesn't belong to a person, belongs to none other than the compact disc, which was launched today in 1983 by Sony, Philips and Polygram, making the CD a ripe 26 years old. And while the scratches are annoying, at least your cd player won't eat it like the tape player used to eat cassettes, (which I miss btw).
1967 heralded the ninth annual Grammy Awards. Winners for that year included: Frank Sinatra winning Record of the Year for Strangers in the Night and Album of the year for Sinatra, a Man and His Music. John Lennon and Paul McCartney won Song of the Year for Michelle, Best Contemporary Rock and Roll Recording went to The New Vaudeville Band for their song, Winchester Cathedral.
I love the movie Dazed and Confused, but I love the soundtrack to the movie even more as it contains some of the greatest classic rock hits from the 70's. One that didn't make it that SHOULD have was Free's single All Right Now. After being used in a Wrigley's Gum commercial, the song went to #2 in the UK singles chart in 1991, 21 years after it's original release.
In 1999, Bob Dylan performed at the opening of The Las Vegas House of Blues, with U2's Bono joining him in singing, Knockin On Heaven's Door.
There is nothing like good guitar. To hear a screaming solo or an awesome guitar riff.....ahhhhhh just thinking about it makes me wanna go turn the stereo to 11. In 2007 Classic Rock Magazine held a poll for "wildest guitar hero" of all time. Jimi Hendrix took home the crown, followed by Keith Richards who took second, Stevie Ray Vaughan who took third, Jimmy Page of Led Zepellin took fourth and Dimebag Darrell, who played with bands like Pantera and Damageplan took fifth.
Finally, music lost an amazing musician one year ago today, when Canadian guitarist/singer/ Jeff Healey died of cancer. The musician, who played his guitar from his lap was blind from the age of 1 and appeared in the 1989 hit movie Road House.
Well, that's it for me. Keep it real and I'll be back tomorrow for another edition of This Day In Rock.
