Requiem

Music is the soundtrack of our lives.  It says much about who we are.  There is music that pours out of us when our child's first cry is sounded, although only few of us put that music to paper.  There is music that pour out of us through the different stages of our lives, and there is music that pours from us when we lose someone we love.  I know this all too well as tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of my Grandaddy's death.  Music is in the very fabric of life from it's beginning, to it's ending.

If you watched the video at the top of today's article, you will or should instantly recognize Trans Siberian Orchestra.  I have had the opportunity to see them in concert twice, own all of their CDs and am waiting anxiously for the release of Night Castle.  However, there are many people who are only familiar with their Christmas music and haven't experienced Beethoven's Last Night.  This is a CD that honors one of the world's greatest composers.  His music is recognized by everyone who hears it, even if that ear can not put his name to it.  And it was on this day in 1827 this musical genius, Ludwig van Beethoven, slipped from this world into death.

175 years later, in 2002 the music world would lose another great musician, when former Ozzy Osbourne drummer Randy Castillo, lost his life to cancer at the age of 51.  He is also known for the time he spent with Motley Crue in 2000, recording on the band's album New Tattoo.

Today's look back in the world of music is not just about death, but about life as well.  So, it is with great pleasure that I give a happy birthday to one of Rock's greatest and most influential front men,  Mr. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.  Born in 1948, he turns 61 today.

With their signing to Geffen Records on this day in 1986, Guns N Roses experienced their "birth" into the music industry.  GnR has been the topic of many discussions over the past couple of days with the announcement that DJ Ashba has signed on as lead guitar for the band.  And while there are many opinions to this development, their music from Appetite For Destruction is still a CD that is a driving force.

Life holds to it's course and we ride it's currents.  Sometimes we float along calmly and other times we are caught in it's rapids and waves, but around every corner is music from it's beginning, to it's end.
