February 2009, This Day In Rock
Are You Ready To Party?
Get your party groove going on this day in rock.
A belated Happy Valentines Day to everyone, as the 14th fell on Saturday. I hope that love abounded and heartache was minimal. But, now that we have spent the weekend spreading the love...or not, whichever the case may be, it's time to get town to business and see what happened today on this day in rock.
As we have 3 birthdays to look at today, let's tackle them first and see who we need to break out the pinata for today. Spanning across different genres of music, our group of birthday boys is an interesting group for sure. Born in 1935, with a #1 single in 1965 with I Got You Babe, the late Mr. Sonny Bono, who would have been 74. Born in 1961, the charismatic guitarist for Duran Duran, Mr. Andy Taylor turns 48 today. And ready to melt your face off, Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, born in 1965 turns 44.
Now that we've attended the birthday party, busted open the pinata, and had cake and presents, let's move on to a different celebration. A celebration of number ones. In 1991, we have two different number 1's, but both on the UK charts. One on the album and one on the singles. Queen's Innuendo landed them their 7th UK #1 album and topping out at the singles chart, was the very unforgettable Simpsons with Do the Bartman. And finishing up our #1 party is 3 Doors Down, who in 2005 had the #1 album with Seventeen Days.
With every party, someone always gets out of control, the cops are called and someone spends the night in the tank after taking the oh so attractive mug shots. Well, today's party is no exception as we have two cases of arrests.
In 1974, The band members of Emerson, Lake and Palmer were arrested during their US tour, when they were caught skinny dipping in their hotel pool in Salt Lake City. They were each fined $75.
And in 2005, Kid Rock found himself in the legal spotlight when he allegedly punched a DJ at a Nashville strip club. Police were called to the scene, but Kid was already gone. He found himself pulled over a short time later, and although the officer smelled alcohol, he did not administer a breathalyzer, but did get an autograph. That officer has since been fired. Kid would be arrested a short time later however, attended Night Court and was released on $3,000 bail.
Sometimes, the party is over before it ever gets started as Mick Jagger found out in 1992. Upon trying to enter Japan, he was refused entry due to not having proper papers to enter into the country. The Stones singer spent the night in a Tokyo airport hotel, but was eventually issued a visa by Japanese Immigrations officials.
Well, it's time to turn off the lights, because the party's over. Let the cleanup crew do their job, and get everything all shiny for tomorrow. Have a great one and come back tomorrow...hopefully without a hangover!!
