January 2009, This Day In Rock
Waking From the Dream
Death, Dance and Hall of Fame on this Day in Rock
They say that things happen in threes. Well, we have some facts that will follow that theme throughout today's day in rock. But we'll get to that as they come along, and I'm sure that you will be able to put it together.
When the movie Footloose came out, there were people who thought that the concept of a town not allowing dancing was a far fetched notion. Not as much as you would think. The town that I grew up in had such an ordinance and any "dance" that was held was done at the County Fair Grounds, and even though it was in the city limits, it was county property thus not having to hold to the "no dance" rule. Cleveland, Ohio had such a law stating that people under 18 were not allowed to dance in public, unless they were escorted by an adult. Police started enforcing the law that dated back to 1931 on this day in rock in 1956.
To promote their album Crime of the Century, British band Supertramp started British tour on this day in rock, that would span 13 days in 1975. From the album came the single Dreamer that would reach #13 in the UK and would make it to #15 in the US.
This next fact from this day in rock took place in 1978. Now, in doing a bit of research on this one, I've run across the same general fact, but with enough difference in the telling to make you notice. What we do know is that Terry Kath, guitarist for the band Chicago accidentally shot himself, believing the gun to be unloaded. On account says that he was cleaning the gun, while another says he playing around with it at a party. Both accounts do say that his last words were "Don't worry, it's not loaded". He died instantly from the wound. (1)
Now, it's time to take a look at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees for the year 1986. Inducted were, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Check Berry, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Little Richard and Fats Domino.
After surviving the plan crash in 1977 that would kill two band members, 37 year old former Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins, who had been ill for several months died from pneumonia. (2)
And finally, Richard Berry, writer of Louie Louie by The Kingsmen died from an aneurysm while asleep. He was at his Los Angeles home and was 63 years old. (3)
There's a saying in one of my favorite book series that says "Life is a dream from which we all must wake". And we find 3 cases of rockers waking from the dream on this day in rock. I hope that your dream, and in saying that I mean your life is pleasant and prosperous this January 23rd.
