Ron Asheton (60) was found dead of an apparent heart attack.
According to local police, Ron Asheton (60) was found dead in his Ann Arbor, Mich. home on January 6, 2009 of an apparent heart attack.
The Stooges were formed in 1967 by brothers Ron and Scott Asheton with Iggy Pop. While clearly predecessors to Punk and Alternative Rock, the Stooges experienced very little commercial success in their original incantation and subsequently parted ways in 1974. From that time to the reformation of the Stooges in 2003, Ron Asheton worked with such acts as The New Order and Destroy All Monsters. Rolling Stone has ranked him number 29 on their 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list.
The Stooges are nominated for induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
