January 2009, This Day In Rock
Januray "Hall of Fame" 12th
A look at some past hall of fame inductees as well as a couple of other choice tid bits for your January 12th
Ahhhhhhh January. The smell of another Super Bowl championship is just on the horizon, along with the inductees for the NFL Hall of Fame. Well, January is not only the month for just the NFL’s Hall of Fame, but Rock and Roll’s Hall of fame as well, and before we cover our “daily” facts, we’re going to take a look at some Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductees for the years 1993, 1995, and 1998. And did I mention, the nominees from these years were inducted on This Day In Rock?
1993 saw CCR, The Doors, Van Morrison, Sly and the Family Stone, Frankie Lymon, Dinah Washington and Etta James into the Hall, along with Cream, who reunited to perform at the induction ceremony held in Los Angeles.
1995’s inductees included: Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brother’s Band, Martha and the Vandellas, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Al Gree and Frank Zappa.
In 1998, the Hall welcomed The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, The Mamas and The Papas, Santana, Lloyd Price, Gene Vincent, Allen Toussaint and Jelly Roll Morton.
This year’s nominees will be announced this month and will be officially inducted on April 4, 2009. The list of this year’s nominees include: Jeff Beck, Chick, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Metallica, Run-DMC, The Stooges, War and Bobby Womack.
On this day in 1969, legendary rock band Led Zeppelin released their self titled debut album. The band’s original name had been, The New Yardbirds, but was changed after the Who’s drummer, Keith Moon said that their music would go over like a “led zeppelin”.
On this day in 1974, Steve Miller found his single The Joker number one on Billboard’s Top 100 chart. The song had entered the charts in October of 1973.
On this day, in 1984, the Madison Square Garden hosted the opening show for now legendary (and should be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame) metal band, Motley Crue’s first US tour.
In the year 2000, Smashing Pumpkins bad times just got a little worse on this day, when their manager Sharon Osbourne parted ways with the band. When speaking about her departure, Osbourne was quoted as saying, “It was with great pride and enthusiasm that I took on management of the Pumpkins back in October, but unfortunately I must resign today due to medical reasons - [Pumpkins frontman] Billy Corgan was making me sick!”
I hope that your January 12th is a hall of fame day! Keep rockin, and keep reading!!
