January 2009, This Day In Rock
Historic Happenings
Hall of Fame, Inaugural performances and more
This Day in Rock is full of historical happenings. As the rock and roll world looks at it's hall of famers our nation prepares for Tuesday and the inauguration of our new president. Toady, we will look back at former Hall of Fame inductees as well as former inauguration performances. We also have a birthday today as well as an interesting decision from the Liverpool tourism officials.
Today would have marked the 66th birthday of legendary female vocalist Janis Joplin, who was born in Port Arthur, Texas. She is remembered for her hits Me and Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart, and my favorite, Mercedes Benz, which was one of the last recordings she completed.
Performing at Jimmy Carter's inaugural ball in 1977, were Aretha Franklin who preformed God Bless America and The Charlie Daniels Band. In 1993, the performers for the inaugural concert for Bill Clinton included: Aretha Franklin performing I Have A Dream, Fleetwood Mac with Don't Stop, which was used by the Clinton campaign as their unofficial theme song. Michael Jackson, Judy Collins, Chuck Berry, Michael Bolton and Little Richard performed as well.
1994's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees included: Elton John, The Band, The Grateful Dead, Duane Eddy, Willie Dixon, Bob Marley, Johnny Otis, Rod Stewart and John Lennon. Stewart, who was supposed to receive his award from Jeff Beck was unable to attend the ceremony due to being detained in Los Angeles after the infamous earthquake of 1994 which happened two days before the induction. Lennon was induced by Paul McCartney, who was quoted saying, "The thing you must remember is, that I'm the number one John Lennon fan. I love him to this day and I always did love him."
And to finish up our historical trip down memory lane, our last stop takes place in Liverpool, England, where tourist officials prohibited signs that read, "Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles" to be erected because the Highway Agency felt they would be a distraction to drivers.
Well, that's all I have for you on this Monday, January 19th. Hope yours is historic!
