January 2009, This Day In Rock

Distracted.......

Fri, Jan 09, 2009

Can you keep YOUR mind on This Day In rock?

Ok, I'll be honest.  My mind is not wanting to wrap around what it needs to be.  Nope, it's thinking of other things.  BCS Football with the Oklahoma Sooners playing for the championship, Total Drama Island is going to replay all of their episodes, starting in 38 minutes.  And I missed the first one the last time around....and then there's OTHER things.  Other very distracting things.  And when all of this is going on it once, it makes it hard for the synapses in your brain to synaps.  But even in the midst of distraction, I'll do my best to synap to it and give you what happened on this day in rock.

Let's start today as we have the past couple of days, with a birthday.  Today, we wish a very happy birthday to legendary guitarist Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, who was born this day in 1944.

In 1976, Queen held the number one song in the UK with the amazing piece that can only be described as rock meets theater with Bohemian Rhapsody, a song that is now immortalized because of the movie Wayne's World.

In 1984, Van Halen released their album of the same name (1984) on January 9th.  The album would reach #2 on the album charts with the hits:  Jump, Panama, and Hot For Teacher.

In 1997, David Bowie celebrated his 50th birthday.  Nope, today is NOT his birthday, yesterday was, but his birthday celebration took place on January 9th at Madison Square Garden, where he held a benefit concert featuring the Foo Fighters, Lou Reed, Frank Black, Robert Smith, Sonic Youth and Placebo.

There is one thing I don't get.  Crazy stalker fans.  I understand being a huge fan and thinking an artist is hot, BUT I don't get these people who will go out of their way and do anything to get an artists attention.  Such is the case with this next story.

Karen McNeil, had a thing for Axl Rose.  So much of a thing, that she claimed to be married to him and that she even communicated with him telepathically.  On this day in 2001, she was arrested outside of his Malibu home for violating her probation, that I would assume dealt with a restraining order.  See?  I don't get it!

Moving on to 2005, we find a wedding celebration.  Vince Neil of Motley Crue's 4th wedding to be specific.  In a ceremony performed by MC Hammer, who stared with Neil on the reality TV show The Surreal Life, the singer married his girlfriend Lia Gerardini in Las Vegas.

Well, Total Drama Island is over, it's half time in the football game, and I think I've covered the high points for this day in rock.  Hope you have a great weekend!

Note:  My Sooners lost the game. I'm not surprised by this, but still a little disappointed.  Congratulations to Florida for a well deserved title.
