January 2009, This Day In Rock
Big Wheel Keep on Turnin
Days spin on bringing us more events for this day in rock
Well, here we are finding ourselves at January 20th. The month is just half over, can you believe it? It seems that time tends to just go faster and faster. Yesterday there were 4 teams left standing in the NFL, now we're down to 2 and in just 2 weeks a Champion will be crowned. And trust me, I have no problem letting you know I'm hoping my mighty Steelers bring home a 6th Lombardi Trophy, becoming the ONLY team in the NFL to have 6. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is shaping up, and the United States prepares for change as today is President Obama's inauguration. To use a phrase from one of my favorite authors, Robert Jordan, and his amazing book series, The Wheel of Time just continues to spin faster and faster and I just hope we're all ready for the ride.
In hitting the reverse button on the wheel, we can look back on the events and happenings for January 20th on This Day In Rock.
In 1958, St Louis radio station KWK decided to change their formant and removed all Rock n Roll music from their play list. The entire library got a farewell from the disc jockeys before every rock album was smashed into pieces. Robert T Convey, the station's manager felt that Rock n Roll had reigned the airwaves for long enough and said the removal was "a simple weeding out of undesirable music."
Moving around to 1973, The Grand Ole Opry book Jerry Lee Lewis but told him that he had to agree to play only Country and Western tunes. Well, he did.....for awhile, but wasn't able to make it through the whole set before going into his rockin hits from the 50's and leaving a trail of profanity yelling, "I amt he rock and rollin' country and western, rhythm and blues singin' motherf***er." I'd be money that he was never invited back to the Grand Ole Opry after that.
In 1982, Ozzy Osbourne was one the big name shock rockers out. And where I'm from, parents tried very hard to keep their kids from listening to any of his music, as he would lead you on a path straight to hell. And on this day in that year, Ozzy ended up having to go through a series of rabies shots after biting the head off of a live bat that was thrown at him during a concert in Des Moines Iowa. My source claims that he thought the bat was plastic, but as Ozzy was willing to just about anything, you never know.......
And finally, we zero in on the year 1998 when starting at New York University, a multimedia exhibit that would continue on in a free tour of US colleges, that featured more than 250 of Rolling Stone covers and memorabilia from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Well, I hope that the wheel didn't spin you into dizziness and that your day rocks!
