January 2009, This Day In Rock

Arrests, Prisons and Concerts, Oh My.....

A whole lot of shaking going on this day in rock.

January 13th was another busy day in the rock world with arrests, prisons, lawsuits and TV appearances.  With rockers from across the different rock genres, there was a whole lot of shaking going on.

In 1967, The Rolling Stones appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, and like The Doors the were forced to change lyrics to the song they were going to perform.  Instead of Let's Spend the Night Together, their performance for the show was to be changed to Let's Spend Some Time Together.  In his disapproval of the censorship, singer Mick Jagger made sure that he called attention to it by rolling his eyes when he sang the changed lyrics.

In 1968, Johnny Cash went to Folsom State Prison in California and recorded a live album entitled Live At Folsom Prison, going against advice given to him by Columbia Record executives.  The Album would become one of his biggest selling records, going all the way to #1 on the Country album chart and to #13 on the Hot 200.  The album became certified triple platinum in 2003 and made #88 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

In a lawsuit that would eventually be dropped, the Y.M.C.A. filed a lawsuit against the Village People for their song of the same title in 1979.  In doing further research about this, I have run across reports claiming this to be rumor and not fact.

In 2003, Pete Townshend, guitarist for The Who was arrested on suspicions of child porn.  From his South West London home, seven computers were impounded by police.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can almost taste the Super Bowl!  My team the mighty, mighty Steelers are one game away....one dangerous game away.  Just as big as the game, is the half time show.  And for the most part, I'm always disappointed in the performance.  There's always the hype and no substance, such as when the Stones played at Super Bowl XL, and as Mick said, they "twied, and they twied" and I couldn't wait for the 3rd quarter to start.  They need to have a good ol' heavy metal monster band have at it.  Have Kiss, or the Crue or Metallica take on the half time show, and you'll get a SHOW.

I wonder for how many bands or artists playing the halftime show is one of their goals.  In 2004, U2 singer Bono, in his hopes to raise awareness of AIDS in Africa requested to perform the song An American Prayer with Jennifer Lopez, only to be turned down by the NFL, who stated "We don't believe it's appropriate to focus on a single issue."

Well, it's time for me to move on and take care of other adventures that need to be sought after.  May your January 13th be awesome!!

Update:  In doing research for this column, my system is far from perfect and at times, I find out things after the fact, such as with this.  Today would have marked the 46th birthday of the late Tim Kelly, guitarist for Slaughter who was killed in a car accident in 1998.
