Well, the countdown is on as we are on the last official day of 2008.  It has been amazing year for me personally, as well as an amazing year for the rock world.  Of course the biggest event that leaps to my mind in the reuniting of the Crue and their amazing summer extravaganza: Cruefest.  I got to attend the show in St Louis and was blown away.  I'm excited about hitting on those facts during 2009.  I hope your 2008 was memorable and that your 2009 holds many great things in store for you.  But for now, let's get on with the New Year's Eve party edition of This Day In Rock.

The number one song in the US for the year 1955, based from jukebox plays and radio air time, according to Billboard Magazine, was Unchained Melody by Les Baxtor and his Orchestra.

In 1966, the number one hit to top the Billboard Hot 100, on this day, was a Neil Diamond song made popular by the Monkees.  None other than I'm A Believer.  Of course, I like the Shrek version myself...you be the judge.

Fleetwood Mac was founded in 1967.  On December 31, 1974 the band marked their 10th line up change by asking Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham to join the band.



On this day in 1984, Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen while out driving with his girlfriend in his Corvette, found him self in a race against another driver that was almost detramental to his career.  Upon being thrown from the car, he lost his left arm.  Although doctors re-attatched the arm, within three days they had to remove it three days later.  As we all know, he came back to join the band a marvel to the rock world, using a special drum kit, enabling him to play with his feet.

In 2005 Welsh singer Tom Jones was knighted on this day, by Queen Elizabeth II.  I guess THAT'S what's new.....pussycat. *wink*
