I wasn’t sure what to say about a band that managed to ride top positions on U.S. and Canadian charts simultaneously, and sold 500,000 CDs in a time when CD sales are depressingly low.

Anything Nickelback does after All the Right Reasons is gravy. Right?

Yeah. That and much more!

Dark Horse is a great Nickelback album. Only time will tell if it will rival the success of All the Right Reasons. But they definitely followed that same formula.

“Something in Your Mouth” forcefully opens the album. Setting the tone with Chad Kroeger’s direct lyrics to make this and several other songs much more interesting then the riffs would be otherwise. There isn’t a hidden message anywhere in this album. Which works very well for the band. They sound their best when all pretension is left out.

“S.E.X.”, “Next Go Around” and “Shakin’ Hands” are straightforward, hand you your ass, rock songs. And for that, they will be on heavy rotation in bars everywhere.
