The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

December 30th was a day of hellos, goodbyes, gold records and insanity.

In 1967, the Beatles scored their 15th number one hit on the Billboard chart with Hello Goodbye.  The "B" side held their lowest ranked "B" side single I Am The Walrus, which only went to number 56.  Sad as that's one of my favorite Beatles tunes.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer got together in 1970.  Over an eight year stint they sold over 35 millions albums.  On this day in 1978, the band announced that they were splitting up.

When I was a kid, every weekend you would find me at the skating rink.  REVERSE SKATE!!  Of course, this was before roller blades and Galaga and Pac-Man were always hard to get in line for, along with Joust and Centipiede.  One of the biggest songs out that I remember skating to was by The J. Geils Band.  On this day in 1981, their album "Freeze-Frame" went Gold.

I hate reading about the tragic things that happen to rockers as I look for the facts to supply for this column.  As much as we love or hate a particular artist, we as fans should keep in mind that they are in fact only people.  People who have chosen to pursue the talents that lie within themselves and that they share with the world.  If they are able to take those talents to superstar status, does that give us any less reason to treat them with respect instead of insane motives?

In 1999 on this day, at approximatly 3 a.m. George Harrison's home was broken into and he was attacked by a 33 year old man from Liverpool.  Michael Abram stabbed Harrison multiple times in the chest.  Harrison's wife and son came to his aid, hitting Abram over the head with a lamp, and was able to restrain him until authorities could arrive.  Although Harrison endured a collapsed lung, he did recover from the injury.  Sadly, at trial, Abram would be found not guilty by reason of insanity.
