This Day in Rock, December 1st

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.  I find it hard to believe that we are already into December.  This year has flown by and I can't help but think that in one month's time I will have facts from 2008 lying in the wings for this column.

Today, all of our facts keep us in the 1970's.  The decade in which I was born and a decade in which some amazing music was brought forth.  Music that blasts from my computer's speakers quite frequently.

In 1972, there was a song that was released that would make it to number 1 that had much speculation about it.  A song that was later redone by Faster Pussycat and featured in the movie "How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days".  I am speaking of none other that Carley Simon's hit, "You're So Vain".  So, who was the song talking about?  Many guesses included:  Mick Jagger (who sang uncredited background vocals on the song), Cat Stevens, Warren Beatty, and Kris Kristofferson (all of whom she had had a prior relationship with), one unfaithful former fiance, William Donaldson, and her ex-husband James Taylor.

On this day, in 1976 one of my favorite bands of all time, Fleetwood Mac held the number one spot on the alubms chart with Rumors.  In my opinion, this is by far their best album EVER.

Also on this day in 1976, British punk band the Sex Pistols, who had just released their first single "Anarchy For the UK", appeared on a British TV's Today Show, filling in as a last minute replacement for the band Queen.  When the show's interviewer, Bill Grundy asked them about their "nasty reputation", bass player Glenn Matlock lived up to it, by saying a profain word while on air.  The result?  The band was banned from all but 5 cities that they were booked for on their  first UK tour, and by January, no club or hall in Britain would book the band.
